AI tools can accelerate transcription, dialogue isolation, search, cleanup and version preparation, but speed is not the same as editorial judgement. In audio post, the useful question is whether a tool improves a controlled workflow without hiding artefacts, rights problems or irreversible decisions.

Evaluate AI by task, source quality and failure mode. A model that works impressively on one interview may damage a dramatic performance with overlapping voices or production effects.

Where AI Currently Adds Practical Value

Speech-to-text can create searchable transcripts and first-pass cue sheets. Source-separation and dialogue-isolation tools can provide options for difficult material, while metadata models can help classify large effects libraries.

These uses are strongest when the output remains reviewable. The editor should be able to compare the processed result with the source, adjust the amount and restore material the model removed incorrectly.

Recognise the Failure Modes

Build an Accountable Workflow

Keep original recordings, note the model and version, and print processed alternatives to clearly labelled playlists. Do not make an AI result the only surviving source.

Check consent, confidentiality and client policy before uploading unreleased dialogue or picture to a cloud service. Local processing may be preferable when contracts restrict third-party handling.
