Create a Stable Editorial Foundation
Use clip gain to align words and phrases before compression. Repair obvious noise changes, plosives and edit boundaries, then match ADR and alternate microphones to the production perspective.
Keep room tone continuous. A perfectly clean line surrounded by changing noise is often less intelligible because the edit itself attracts attention.

Control Dynamics Without Losing Performance
Use serial, moderate control rather than one compressor doing all the work. A track stage can manage inconsistent recordings while a dialogue bus provides gentle cohesion.
Retain whispers, shouts and off-screen distance as dramatic choices. Automation should protect important words without erasing the actor's dynamic intent.

Intelligibility is relational. Carve or automate music and effects around speech when required instead of continuously boosting dialogue. Dynamic EQ or side-chain control can help, but hand-shaped rides remain more transparent for important scenes.
Check at calibrated level, then at low consumer level. If only consonants disappear, tonal or masking work may be better than raising the entire dialogue stem.
